 RESNET Ratings provides a relative energy use index called the HERS® Index - a HERS Index of 100 represents the energy use of the "American Standard Building" and an Index of 0 (zero) indicates that the Proposed Building uses no net purchased energy (a Zero Energy Building). A set of rater recommendations for cost-effective improvements that can be achieved by the Rated Building is also produced.

 

RESNET standards encompass three areas:

  • Software accreditation achieved by passing a battery of software verification tests developed by U.S. National Laboratories and RESNET
  • Definition of knowledge base and skill sets that a rater must demonstrate through passing an online RESNET National Rater Test
  • A quality assurance evaluation that features each Rating Provider employing a certified Quality Assurance Designee. The Quality Assurance Designee must annually independently verify internal consistency of a minimum 10% of all building input files and independently field verify the accuracy of a minimum of 1% of each certified Rater's homes
 

Before you buy a home request a certified HERS rating with improvement recommendations inspection. You can often get the seller to make the improvements or get a credit to do them yourself. You may also qualify for an Energy Efficient Mortgage or an Energy Improvement Mortgage. Typically the cost for a certified rating for an existing home is $150 plus .15/sf or $200 plus .18/sf if there is ductwork which needs to be tested.

 

New Construction

 

A  H.E.R.S. or Energy Star rating for new construction is a 3 phase process:

  1. Plan review, take-off, and projected rating before start of construction
  2. Pre drywall and thermal bypass inspection mid-construction
  3. Post completion inspection, diagnostic testing, and confirmed rating certification

 

Base Fees: (based on conditioned space) Contact us for a custom quote, simpler plans less, complex plans more, additions/remodels may require an extra site visit - $75-min.

 

  1. From plans - .12 per square foot, minimum $250
  2. Mid phase -  .05 per square foot, minmum $75 
  3. Confirmed -  .10 per square foot, w/no ductwork, minimum $225,    .13 per square foot, w/duct testing, minimum $275

          

          For Energy Star V.3 certification add $150

          Combustion equipment testing (required if equipment is in conditioned space) $75/hour

          More than one heating system w/ ductwork - $60 each additional

          Revisions/Extra site visits/Additional services - $75/hour
